A contractor called out to repair a mini-split in Bibb County has to account for what the outdoor unit has been running against before they can say whether a component failed from age, a poor original install, or something the weather drove. 70 severe weather events were recorded in Bibb County, Georgia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing part of operating conditions here, and the outdoor compressor and refrigerant lines carry that load directly. A quote that skips over weather-related stress on those components and jumps straight to the simplest fix risks missing what actually shortened the part's life.

Half the homes in Bibb County, Georgia were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split that has been running in a house of that vintage has almost certainly been installed or swapped out well after the house was built, and the repair question a contractor faces is about the unit's own parts, not the walls around it. When a refrigerant valve or control board fails, what determines the scope is whether that component is still manufactured and what a distributor can actually put on a truck. Housing age does not answer that. The opened system does.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks First

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing an interior wall-mounted air conditioning unit connected by a line to an outdoor condenser beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall and is the piece most homeowners notice day to day. It draws room air across a coil and a blower, and when a room stops cooling or heating properly, the handler itself is where a contractor starts: the coil, the blower wheel, the condensate drain, and the sensors that tell the unit what the room is doing.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor, the outdoor coil, and the fan that moves air across it. A refrigerant line set and a control wire run between the two units through a small penetration in the wall, and faults in the compressor, the refrigerant charge, or the wiring between units show up as symptoms inside even though the source is outside.

The drawing shows a typical mini-split layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply and what each one needs in your specific home.
