Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A black mailbox with a red flag on a weathered wooden post stands in a grassy yard during rain, in front of a single-story brick house with a dark shingle roof and tall pine trees behind it.

A mini-split sized for a mild operating environment will be undersized for what Laurens County actually asks of it. 132 severe weather events were recorded in Laurens County, Georgia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is not an occasional stressor a system recovers from between quiet seasons. A contractor quoting an install here has to size for real cumulative load, and the equipment selection, the mounting location, and the refrigerant line routing all follow from that judgment. A unit that fits the catalog spec for the square footage may still be wrong for the site.

Electrical panels in much of this county's housing stock were sized for whatever was running at the time the house was built, and a mini-split's outdoor unit draws differently from what those panels were designed around. Half the homes in Laurens County, Georgia were built in 1989 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing a mini-split installation here checks the panel early, because discovering it needs an upgrade after the equipment arrives changes the job's scope and the bill. The ductwork question is simpler for a mini-split than for a ducted system, but the electrical is not, and in stock of this age that is where the real variables sit.

What a Mini-split Installation Puts in Your Home

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall, inside the room being conditioned, and moves air across a refrigerant coil to heat or cool the space. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil, which are the mechanical core of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line routes moisture away from the indoor unit, and a dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific home.
